Our "Green" Policy
We work hard to conserve as many resources as possible, here
at Brass Arts Unlimited. Both retail sales and instrument repair are
activities that are traditionally very wasteful and harmful. We're lucky
to be located in Baltimore County, which operates very comprehensive and
progressive recycling and waste reduction programs. Here are some of the
ways that we reduce waste, reuse products, and recycle materials:
- Packing materials, such as "peanuts" and other void-fill,
are almost infinity reusable. We save and reuse as many packing
materials as possible.
- Corrugated boxes are fairly durable and we can often get
multiple uses out of a box, as long as it retains its integrity.
- Used corrugated and other office paper waste are
recycled.
- Used electronics are e-cycled.
- We judiciously use lights, heating, and air conditioning.
Our unusual location is partially underground, and temperatures tend to be
moderate, allowing us to heat and cool less. At night, we reduce the
heating in winter and turn off the air conditioning in summer. As we
replace heating and air conditioning units, we get high efficiency units
that are appropriate to the size of our store. Our lights are almost
all fluorescent, which use less electricity than incandescent lights.
- We've reduced the number and kinds of chemicals we use in
our repair work. Most important is our ultrasonic cleaning unit.
The chemicals used in our ultrasonic tank have far less impact on the
environment than other chemicals used in cleaning.
- It's a small thing, but our coffee-maker drips into an
insulated carafe, eliminating the need to keep a warming element on.
- We try to contact our customers using email as much as
possible, rather than by more resource-intensive methods. We don't
produce catalogs, again because the resources needed are great.
Reduce, reuse, recycle. We believe in it.
So, if you get a package from us and the box or the void-fill
is re-used, remember that we do it for the environment. A green approach
also helps us keep our costs down, which means keeping our prices down, too.
