This year’s event will be Saturday, November 9 from 8:00 – 5:00PM and held again at George Mason’s DeLaski Performing Arts Center, 4400 University Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030. Horn Day! is a mini horn convention free to enthusiasts of all ages.
The DC metropolitan area probably has more hornists than anywhere else in the world due to the SIX military bands based here and the numerous professional and non-professional musical orchestras and ensembles in the region. Capital Horns, an amateur horn ensemble has over 70 members! Invitations will be sent out to all the schools in the region.
Horn Day! is horn central in the DC area for one day, Saturday, November 9.
This year’s featured guest is National Symphony Orchestra’s Associate Principal Horn, Laurel Ohlson. She will be performing, teaching a masterclass, and leading a gathering of alphorns! Additional performers include James Nickel and Amy Horn as soloists with Capital Horns conducted by noted educator and hornist Jeff Bianchi. Other notable hornists participating include Ken Bell who will share secrets to his multifaceted career, lexicographer Nielsen Dalley who will offer insights about Mozart’s hornist muses, and Sylvia Alimena, who will conduct attendees and guests in a final thrilling concert including alphorns!
